Deyda Hydara

Deyda Hydara (June 9, 1946 Barra-December 16, 2004 Kanifing District) was a Gambian journalist and editor.

Hydara was the co-founder and editor of The Point, one of the leading newspapers in The Gambia known for its critical reporting on government actions and human rights abuses. He was also a correspondent for Agence France-Presse (AFP) and Reporters Without Borders.

Hydara was a prominent figure in the fight for press freedom in The Gambia and was often targeted by the government for his critical reporting. He received death threats and was subjected to harassment and intimidation by government officials.

On the night of December 16, 2004, Hydara was assassinated by unknown assailants while driving home from work. His killing sparked outrage among journalists and human rights activists, who believed that it was a targeted attack aimed at silencing critical voices in the country.

Despite international pressure, the Gambian government never conducted a thorough investigation into Hydara's murder, and the case remains unsolved. Hydara is remembered as a courageous journalist who stood up for press freedom and paid the ultimate price for his commitment to the truth.
