Thomas R. Odhiambo
Thomas R. Odhiambo (February 4, 1931 Nyanza Province-May 26, 2003 Nairobi) also known as Thomas Risley Odhiambo was a Kenyan entomologist.
He was born in Nyanza Province, Kenya in 1931. He began his studies in entomology at Makerere University, Uganda and later studied at the University of London. He is known for his work in the areas of insect behavior and control, especially in the area of tsetse fly control, which is responsible for the spread of trypanosomiasis or sleeping sickness.
Odhiambo was a founding member of the International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (ICIPE), which was established in 1970 to conduct research on insects and their impact on the environment and human health. He served as its director from 1971 to 1986, and later became its chairman. In recognition of his contributions to entomology, he was awarded the Japan Prize in 1993.
Aside from his scientific contributions, Odhiambo was also active in politics and served as a member of parliament from 1974 to 1979. He was also involved in the establishment of the National Museums of Kenya and served as its first director.
