Te Wiata had a diverse career, performing in operas such as Porgy and Bess and The Barber of Seville, as well as acting in films such as The Seekers and The Guns of Navarone. In addition to his artistic pursuits, Te Wiata was also a member of the New Zealand Armed Forces during World War II, serving as a gunner in the 27th Machine Gun Battalion.
