Matthee completed her teaching degree in 1954 at the age of sixteen and taught for many years before dedicating herself to writing full-time. Her literary works were primarily written in Afrikaans language and have been translated into 14 languages. Her most famous works include "Fiela's Child", "Circles in a Forest", "The Mulberry Forest", and "Dreamforest". Matthee's books often dealt with issues of racial inequality and environmental conservation, drawing inspiration from the forests and rural areas of South Africa.
