He began his career as an actor in 1907 and went on to work in many of Sweden's leading theaters. Hammarén was also a prolific film actor, appearing in over 70 films throughout his career. He was known for his versatility and ability to play a wide range of characters, from comedic roles to dramatic leads. In addition to his acting work, Hammarén also served as a director at the Royal Dramatic Theatre in Stockholm. He was awarded the Litteris et Artibus medal for his contributions to Swedish culture in 1942.
